Intermediate 1

You usually take these courses if you:

  • have finished Standard Grade Foundation (or Access 3) level; or
  • want to take an alternative to Standard Grade General level; or
  • want to take up a new subject at school or college.

Generally, three national units (blocks of work that usually take 40 hours to finish) plus 40 hours flexible time make up these courses.
 

Drama: Intermediate 1

Why Drama?

This course is ideal if you are interested in finding a career in any area of the perfoming arts but it is also designed to develop a range of skills which are useful to anyone. In it you will explore a variety of issues, topics and themes using a range of drama, theatre and production skills. You will find that the activities in Drama help to build your self awarenes and confidence. Throughout the course you will be encouraged to evaluate your work.

Entry to the course:

At the discretion of the school/college but students will normally have achieved one of the following:

  • Standard grade Drama at Foundation level
  • Access 3 units in Drama.

Course Outline

The course is made up of three compulsory 40 hour units plus 40 hours flexible time.

Drama Skills

This unit uses creative drama activities to explore social attitudes and issues.  Activities include:

  • characterisation
  • role-play
  • devising
  • evaluation.

Theatre/Production Skills

With a more practical emphasis, this unit provides students with opportunities to work together and acquire theatre production skills such as:

  • creating technical effects
  • using technology.

Production

In this unit students work together to stage a small scale production which may be based on improvisation or texts. Individuals may undertake a technical or acting role but teamwork is an essential part of this project which develops skills in:

  • acting
  • planning
  • implementing technology
  • creating special effects. 
 Core Skills
  • Intermediate 1 (SCQF 4) Problem Solving (Critical Thinking, Planning and Organising, Reviewing and Evaluating)
  • Intermediate 1 (SCQF 4) Working with Others.

Assessment

The course is assessed by an external practical examination of performance skills, an externally examined assignment and a folio assessed in school/college according to SQA guidelines.
