Intermediate 1

You usually take these courses if you:

  • have finished Standard Grade Foundation (or Access 3) level; or
  • want to take an alternative to Standard Grade General level; or
  • want to take up a new subject at school or college.

Generally, three national units (blocks of work that usually take 40 hours to finish) plus 40 hours flexible time make up these courses.


Latin: Intermediate 1

Why Latin?

The study of Latin gives you insight into the world of the Romans and helps you develop understanding and appreciation of the language and literature. Skill in Classics is useful when learning other languages and greatly improves the understanding of English.

Entry to the course

At the discretion of the school/college but you would normally be expected to have attained one of the following:

  • Standard Grade Latin at Foundation level
  • an equivalent qualification.

Course Outline

This course is made up of two units.

Translation

  • If you have studied classics before, the work in the first half of the unit consists of consolidating previous work and further learning of grammar and translation. If you are a late beginner to the subject, you will be given an introduction to the language.
  • In the second half of the unit, both groups will be translating the same texts in the original language.

Interpretation

  • This involves the study of original verse and prose texts, some in original Latin, such as Cicero or Ovid.

Core Skills

Completion of this course does not lead to any Core Skills.

Assessment

This course is assessed by a combination of internal assessment by the teacher/lecturer and an external examination set and marked by the SQA.
